The Newest Innovation in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy – Australia/New Zealand.

The advancement of brain technology over the years has been astounding. AIMedical has become the leading supplier of advanced Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation equipment in both Australia and New Zealand.. The Neural Navigator offered by Brain Science Tools BV is designed to accurately navigate a TMS coil to the specific brain region. It’s easy to use, offers clinics exactly what they need and is CE certified as an industry medical device.

What is it?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive form of brain stimulation that works on impacting the central nervous system by applying powerful magnetic fields to certain parts of the brain to help with depression and other neurological issues. Operating completely outside the body, it is usually very well tolerated by patients with minimal side effects.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Equipment Used By Leading Clinics & Medical Practitioners Throughout Australia & New Zealand

At AIMedical, our high tech transcranial magnetic stimulation equipment is well regarded across New Zealand and Australia. Our Brain Science tools can be adjusted for stimulation intensity and anatomical target by taking advantage of a ‘landmark’ in the brain called the motor cortex. This allows the practitioner to determine the best location for the stimulation coil as it relates to the individual’s brain.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation has been being added to the Medicare Benefits Schedule.

From 1 November 2021, items 14216, 14217, 14219 and 14220 have been listed on the MBS for the purpose of:

Patients are eligible for rTMS treatment must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Be an adult (≥18 years) diagnosed with major depressive episode;
  • Have failed to receive satisfactory improvement in depression despite the adequate trialling of at least two different classes of antidepressant medications, unless contraindicated;
  • Have also undertaken psychological therapy unless inappropriate; and
  • Have not received rTMS treatment previously.

Everything You Need To Know About Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

For those with severe depression and neurological issues, the transcranial magnetic stimulation system is a life-changing machine, offering individuals a better quality of life. The AIMedical International team are a leading supplier of equipment for transcranial magnetic stimulation in Australia, and we’re here to let you in on everything you need to know about TMS technology. If you have questions about any transcranial stimulation device when you finish this article, don’t hesitate to reach out to the friendly team at AIMedical International.

What Is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), also known as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression and other neurological issues.

The TMS system has an electromagnetic coil that is placed against the scalp near the forehead. The electromagnet delivers a painless magnetic pulse, stimulating nerve cells in the mood control region of the brain. While the procedure has been proven to improve mood and relieve depressive symptoms, the biology behind the TMS technology isn’t completely understood. Experts believe these pulses activate regions of the brain that have decreased activity when a person is depressed.

What Can Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Help With?

There are several neurological issues that a TMS machine can address by relieving symptoms for individuals.

  • Depression. A TMS device is primarily used to treat major depressive disorder. It’s usually recommended for those who suffer from treatment-resistant depression, which means they haven’t found relief from medication and therapy.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder. An rTMS device targets the prefrontal cortex, which regulates how an individual processes fear and worry. Studies indicate that TMS offers PTSD suffers therapeutic effects that can last up to six months.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder. Again, if an individual isn’t responding to medication or psychotherapy, an rTMS machine can relieve the symptoms of their OCD.
  • Anxiety. As depression and OCD often cause anxiety or anxiety-like symptoms, a TMS device may provide relief.
  • Schizophrenia. Auditory hallucinations are one of the primary symptoms of schizophrenia, caused by an overactive temporoparietal cortex. Targeted TMS to this area of the brain can help reduce auditory hallucinations.
  • Parkinson’s disease. Freezing of gait makes those with Parkinson’s disease feel frozen and inhibits them from moving while walking. Recent studies indicate that rTMS may improve the freezing of gait.
  • Stroke rehabilitation. By stimulating the motor cortex, the part of the brain responsible for voluntary movement, TMS can help with stroke rehabilitation. It can help with the stimulation of muscle movement and may improve dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing.
  • Chronic pain. TMS treatment could improve chronic pain conditions by stimulating the motor cortex and controlling neurotransmitters responsible for pain. Sufferers of chronic pain often find themselves experiencing symptoms of depression too, so the rTMS system may help by treating their depressive symptoms as well.
  • Multiple sclerosis. MS causes muscle tightness and spasticity that makes it difficult for individuals to move. However, recent studies indicate that transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with physical therapy could decrease spasticity.

What Are The Benefits Of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?

There are quite a few benefits of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for medical practitioners and individuals suffering from neurological issues.

  • Success with treating depression. TMS has mainly been studied as a treatment for depression at the time of writing, but the success rate is very promising. The current response rates for TMS treatment for depression are between 30-64%.
  • It’s relatively safe and non-invasive. rTMS doesn’t require surgery or the implantation of electrodes, and unlike electroconvulsive therapy, it doesn’t cause seizures or require sedation with anesthesia.
  • It can be a safer alternative to medications. Certain people, particularly young people, are prone to the adverse side effects of antidepressants. In such cases, TMS is a much safer alternative treatment.
