Automated Home Cage Phenotyping

System Architecture

In PhenoMaster, all data from sensors at the cage level are digitized on-board in the sensor housing and collected by the cage controller. The cage controller is the smart brain of every cage and powers all sensors. Sensors use a modern bus architecture that allows them to be removed and added without interfering with other sensors’ data collection ability. From the cage controller, a single Ethernet connection cable that also carries the cage power (POE = power over Ethernet) submits the data to the computer/server. Cages and Computers must be on the same intranet/subnet. Theoretically, all cages can be plugged into a single Ethernet hub on the back wall of the chamber and the computer located elsewhere in the building outside the animal facility. The result in the animal room is a clean, clutter-free laboratory environment with very few parts and a small footprint. When climate chambers are used, the cages are “plugged-in” into an Ethernet patch panel in the wall of the chamber.

Exercise Respirometry

The TSE CaloTreadmill System is a fully computerized electronically controlled system to investigate exercise calorimetry in mice and rats. CaloTreadmills are enclosed by an air-tight transparent housing that can be connected to a fully automated  indirect gas calorimetry system (CaloSys)  operated by PhenoMaster software. Calorimetric parameters, such as oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), respiratory exchange rate (RQ) and energy expenditure (EE) are determined at fixed temporal intervals while the test animal is moving according to an experimenter-defined activity profile.

New Standard For Behavioural And Cognitive Phenotyping

The IntelliCage, a fully automated system allows you to assess the home cage behavior and cognitive performance of up to 16 individual mice or 8 rats separately while they are living in a social environment. This unique experimental setup fosters natural social behavior in a biologically relevant, enriched but highly standardized home cage context. In this way, the IntelliCage minimizes the need for handling and human intervention, increasing task validity, data reproducibility, and ensuring a high level of animal welfare.

MotoRater
Kinematics & Gait Analysis

MotoRater is a semi-automated system for rodent kinematic gait analysis with high sensitivity to evaluate 4 different motion modalities – overground walking, skilled ladder walking, wading in water and swimming. In contrast to conventional methods, MotoRater allows testing animals in the water, which offers the exceptional opportunity to evaluate severely impaired rodent models, which would not be able to support their body weight on solid ground.

Stellar Telemetry represents the latest technology advancements in implantable physiologic monitoring. The system allows monitoring of many animals with just one receiver and facilitates group housing and social interaction. Stellar implants can be used in animal models ranging from mice to dogs and larger animals and in a wide range of research studies including phenotyping, pharmacology, behavior, metabolic, and general physiology assessment.
